4 Nights Karoo Experience Itinerary

Day 1 - We will depart from Port Elizabeth early morning (08h00) and head straight into the Karoo, along the R62 route to our first destination – the historical town of Graaff Reinet, which was proclaimed in 1786. Cradled in a crook of the Sundays River, to the approaching traveller, Graaff -Reinet seems like a verdant oasis in the stark surrounding landscape. We will book in at our comfortable Guest House, located at the historical centre of town to enjoy a light lunch. After lunch we will explore the many national monuments on foot. Every corner of this town reveals a different part of the country’s vibrant past. The imposing stone structure of the Groot kerk is the high light of our tour. In the afternoon we will depart for the Valley of Desolation to enjoy sundowners from the viewing point. The sunset and stark landscape is breathtaking and a photographer’s dream. In the evening we will enjoy Karoo hospitality and traditional South African cuisine.

Day 2 - Today we take a detour through the foothills of the Sneeuberg Mountains (Snow Mountains). At Ganora Guest Farm we will go on a fossil hunt in the mountains. The farm boasts a variety of fossils, the average age being approximately 240 million years old. By late morning we will reach Nieu Bethesda, home to Helen Martin’s infamous Owl House. We will explore this picturesque town on foot and rendezvous at one of the quaint restaurants. However, our visit to this sleepy town is brief, as our main destination is the splendid Mountain Zebra National Park. This park is home to the Cape Mountain Zebra, a species near extinction, were it not for the proclamation of the park in 1937. Here we will spend two days, due to the vast expanse of and many activities within the park. By late afternoon we will check in at the Lodge to freshen up or just relax around the camp. For supper we will a traditional South African barbeque or braai as it is locally called. The night will be spent under starlight skies around the warm fire.

Day 3 - As the bush awakens we will depart on an early morning game drive. The park is situated on the northern slopes of the Bankberg in the high plateaux of the Karoo. We will head toward the good grazing of the Rooiplaat plateau where we are most likely to view kudu, springbok, wildebeest, eland, blesbok, steenbok, red hartebeest, grey rhebok, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer and duiker. With any luck we will be graced by a spotting of the almost extinct Cape mountain zebra. This species is the rarest, smallest and most beautiful of the zebras: only 1,2m high with stunning geometrical stripes completely different to those of any other zebra species. Various predators prowl the area: cats such as the caracal, the small but vicious black-footed cat and the African wild cat; aardwolf, cape fox, bat-eared fox and black backed jackal are also found. As the sun gets high we will return to the lodge for sumptuous brunch, before we take to the mountains for a bush hike. On return we will relax around the camp until we go on another game drive late afternoon.
After an interesting day of game viewing and hiking we will enjoy a relaxing supper at the lodge and get some well deserved sleep.

Day 4 - Breakfast is enjoyed quite early, followed by a drive through the Zuurberg Mountains to visit Elephant Back Safaris. At this lodge guests have the option to walk with or ride the resident elephants through some of Africa's most diverse landscapes. Riding these gentle giants gives an excellent perspective of the area - at a peaceful and gentle pace. Bush, ravines and forest are encountered on each outing, before relaxing at a waterhole while the elephants frolic and swim. (The cost of this activity is for the travellers own expense). After lunch we will proceed to Addo Elephant National Park, a mesmerising corner of earth. Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region, lays the Addo Elephant National Park. The 300 elephants in the park are the main attraction, but you will also encounter buffalo, black rhino, warthog, eland, kudu and a variety of buck species. Upon arrival we will go to our chalets to freshen up or relax around the camp. Late afternoon we will go on a game drive to view the wild life in its natural surrounds. Back at camp we will enjoy supper and a night cap in good company.

Day 5 - Following breakfast we will go on a game drive to say our goodbyes to Africa’s gentle giants. On return to the chalets we will pack-up and get ready for our return to Port Elizabeth. On route to we will visit Addo Crocodile & Lion Range. This reserve provides good opportunity for close up viewing of Africa’s scariest creatures. We will reach Port Elizabeth by late afternoon. Time permitting we will go for a quick drink at Brooke’s Pavilion to reminiscent over our experiences and memories of our travels through the Eastern Cape.
