Chingola is a copper-mining center, located on the Copperbelt. The city was founded in 1943 to provide services for the adjacent copper-mining center of Nchanga. It is 400km north of Lusaka. Chingola is the home of Nchanga Open Pit Mine, the second largest open cast mine in the world. Chingola has an underground mine. A mine tailings dam about 7 km south of the city covers 24 km².
