Itinerary
45km drive to Lake Nikwita, passing through the villages of Mieze and Metuge. Lake Nikwita is a permanent body of water which attracts hundreds of water birds from the surrounding area, including visiting coastal and migratory species, as well as numerous colourful amphibians. An early start guarantees you sightings of dozens of different species as you walk around the edge of the lake. You can also go out onto the lake in a dugout canoe, poled by a local fisherman, if you want to get a closer look at the birdlife. On your return, breakfast will be served in the shade of the lakeside trees. On the way back to Pemba, there will be a short stop to visit the painted church at Mieze, which depicts the stories of the Bible in unique Mozambican style.
