The Hantam mountain dominates the town of Calvinia, formerly known as Hantam. The first Dutch Reformed minister, ds N J Hofmeyr, suggested changing the name in honour of the Reformer John Calvin. Hantam is the Khoi word for “the mountain where the red bulbs” grow. The town was established in December 1847
