Sanctuary Olonana

This small and exclusive camp, the first of Sanctuary's luxury safari properties, was built along sustainable lines which, along with our innovative wetlands and tree-planting projects, have earned Sanctuary Olonana a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya. The Masai Mara is fabulous for seeing big cats, their prey and all the Big Five. It is also the stage for the greatest show on Earth - the wildebeest migration.

Sanctuary Olonana's main dining room and veranda command views over a dramatic stretch of the Mara River. See, and hear, the family of noisy hippos who colonise the banks below the camp. Experience first hand the sheer scale of the annual wildebeest migration across East Africa. The camp has a library, a pool and even an organic garden where much of the food served in camp is grown. And who could forget the mini-spa where guests can experience traditional African remedies alongside French marine therapies from Thalgo.

Sanctuary Olonana Amenities

Sanctuary Olonana is a small luxury camp with 14 spacious tents. Each tent has floor to ceiling mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, flush lavatories, solar lighting and large, river view verandas. The main dining room and veranda commands a dramatic stretch of
the Mara River providing the perfect setting for breakfast, afternoon tea and after dinner star
gazing. There is a swimming pool,a mini-spa and a small gift shop.

Area Attractions

Included in the rates are game viewing drives, a cultural visit and, weather permitting, a bush meal or sundowner. Game Drives The Mara is a fabulous place for seeing big cats as well as all of the big five, a variety of plains game and over 300 bird species. From around July to October, the Mara is the stage for the greatest show on earth - the wildebeest migration - when grunting herds of wildebeest and zebra rush across the rivers between Tanzania and Kenya, attracting crocodile, lion and cheetah. Cultural Interaction Sanctuary Olonana works closely with a Maasai village which we help support by offering employment and donations to various community projects.

Olonana was the third and final stop on our safari adventure and we did not have as much time there as either Mara Intrepids or Amboseli Porini Camp, but we had been told that we would see the Big Cats at Mara, so this schedule was fine with us. Unfortunately we had heavy rain while at Intrepids and as a result we were unable to cross the river for 2 days worth of game drives and did not locate either the Black Rhino or any Leopards. When we arrived at Olonana and met Vincent, our game driver, we told him this. He took it as his personal mission to ensure we were able to view both. We were skepical. The next morning we went out for our one and only game drive, and not only did Vincent find us elephants, lions and other wildlife, he found us a Black Rhino and a beautiful Leopard. Vincent found us all of the Big Five in one game drive!!!! I am still in awe and it has been five months since our safari.
Olonana is also a fabulously luxurious camp right along the river. The food was wonderful and so were the folks working there. I would return to this secluded and intimate camp in a heartbeat.

This is an excellent camp. Great food, friendly staff and very competent guides. The accomodation is luxurious (in particular considering it is a tented camp), they wash your clothes unpromted, they serve food and drinks in the tent at odd hours and help organizxe your every need. mr King, the manager, takes care of all your needs and really makes an effort to fulfil any and all requirements you may have. I would highly recommend a visit if you choose to go to the Masai Mara.

This was a great spot in the Masa Mara. The location along the river was magical with the hippos frolicking in the water. Mr, King was the manager and a great host to accomodate your needs. Big John the chef did a great job - they even have a pizza oven! Our driver Abdul was excellent. Spa was nice as was the pool. Rooms were nice sized and very attractive. We would recommend it highly.
