umThombe Kei River Lodge is situated on a 160ha private nature reserve along the banks of the Great Kei River. Accommodation is offered in rustic thatched chalets, each with magnificent views of the river. The chalets are fully self-catering and sleep four to six people (camping is also available).
The pulse of the River is felt in everything here: whether you are gliding along in our kayaks, hiking to hidden pools, fishing for the legendary cob, or simply watching sunset turn the cliffs to gold as the crowned cranes fly home to roost.
Fishing - the lodge is situated just opposite the famous "Cob Hole", a 40ft deep fisherman's dream.
Bird-watching - with habitat varying from dense riverine forest to coastal scrub, valley bushveld, open woodland and, of course, the river itself, this is a birder's paradise.
Kayaking - we have two double sit-on-top kayaks and several canoes for our guests' use (free of charge). Enjoy the river at the water-line and experience bird-watching at its best.
Hiking - there are several trails on the nature reserve, ranging from relaxed strolls through riverine forest to more serious hill-climbs, with rewarding views of the sea and Kei Mouth. Or be adventurous and explore the magnificent forests on the other side of the Kei River. We can provide maps and direct you to the best natural features, including Picnic Pool, Gxara Falls, the wreck of the Jacaranda and The Gates. (click here for a map of trails)
Swimming - the Kei River offers safe sandbanks for the kids to play in, as well as deeper channels for all water enthusiasts. Along the hiking trails are waterfalls and pools.
Climbing - opposite the lodge and further up the Kei River are some magnificent cliffs, well worth the challenge of abseiling and climbing.
Kei Mouth, Morgan Bay, and the surrounding area has lots to offer:
The Beach - both Kei Mouth (11km by road) and Morgan Bay (14km) have beautiful safe and sandy swimming beaches. The lagoon in Morgan Bay is especially popular with kids.
Fish and Crayfish - The Wild Coast has long been a popular destination for sport fishermen. Catches from the shore include garrick, kob, steenbras, shad, kingfish, galjoen and hottentot. Deep-sea fishermen have a chance at yellowtail, tuna, yellowfin, swordfish, mackerel, marlin, sailfish, barracuda, cob and queen fish. Fishing, spearfishing, boating and crayfish licenses (amongst others) are available from any Post Office in South Africa. Crayfish season is open from the beginning of April to the end of September.
Surfing - Morgan Bay is a well-kept surfers secret.
Hiking Trails - The 5-day Strandloper Trail from Kei Mouth to Gonubie offers a beautiful window on the Sunshine Coast. For an even more relaxing time try the Wild Coast Meander, overnighting in various hotels along the Wild Coast and ending in Morgan Bay.
Day trips to the Wild Coast - experience the unspoilt grandeur and ruggedness of SA's most beautiful coast. The car ferry at Kei Mouth runs from sunrise to sunset, giving you the whole day to explore. We can advise you on 4x4 routes, fishing spots, beaches and cultural highlights.
