To make the most of your trip to Johannesburg, our friendly and knowledgeable at African Footprints Lodge will happily advise you on things to doa and see and will assist you with booking your adeventures. Here are some ideas. Soweto Around 35km away from African Footprints Lodge, in Soweto, proudly sits Nelson Mandela House, a museum and focal point for the Sowetan community. The four-roomed home, at 8115 Ngakane Street, was Mandela's first house. He moved there with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase, in 1946. Close by is the home of fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu. Soweto is also home to several other museums giving a facinating insight into 1970s South Africa. One of the oldest museums is the Hector Pieterson Museum which honours the thirteen-year-old boy who was one of the first killed in the Student Uprising in 1976. All around you'll find the proud locals of this community, rich with heritage and history, who cannot wait to welcome you and show you around. And after a long day exploring this facinating city come home to the comforts of La Chaumiere Guesthouse and fire up a barbecue (or "braai") and relax around the pool in the warm afternoon sun. Balloon Safaris You'll need to wake up with the African sun and the singing birds, but sailing 2000ft over the Magaliesberg mountain range is a breathtaking and unforgettable experience, not to be missed. This area is known to have the best hot air ballooning weather in the world and sailing over the tree tops of the Magalies River Valley is spectacular. The flight lasts an hour, and will end with a glass of bubbly with your captain. Ask our lodge staff for more information. Sporting Events Are you in town for a sporting event? If you have a need for speed, you'll be pleased to know that our midrand lodge is a short drive away from the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit Race Track.
