The Lokuthula Lodges are superbly fitted out self-catering lodges on the border of the Zambezi National Park, roughly 4km from Victoria Falls town. They fall within the same complex as the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and share amenities such as swimming pools, restaurants, bars and shuttle services with this lodge and The Boma restaurant. The complex is approximately 4km from Victoria Falls and easily reached by good tarmac road. Lokuthula means ‘peace’ in the local dialect and you’ll immediately see why they chose the name. The place is extremely tranquil and laid-back and has a real holiday atmosphere to it. The accommodation consists of two and three bedroomed lodges that can sleep up to six and eight people respectively – making them perfect for families or larger groups of friends. Guests who are used to self-catering units will easily notice how exceptionally well-equipped the lodges’ kitchens are – with everything you can think of and more. It’s very much like home away from home. Unfortunately though, you may find it a bit hard to find fresh, quality meat and produce in the area. There is a SPAR convenience store in Victoria Falls town, but the variety and availability of most food stuffs are sadly a bit lacking. The good news is that you are within walking distance to two great restaurants, and a shuttle service is available to transport you to and from your destinations. The first restaurant (and bar and pool) is situated in the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge building and the second, The Boma, is nearby and offers not only good food, but also live and lively traditional entertainment, including performances by dancers, singers, witchdoctors and the likes. So you needn’t worry about going hungry, although it does defy the object of opting for a self-catering unit a bit.

The Lokuthula Lodge is situated on the border of the Zambezi National Park, approximately 4km from Victoria Falls town and the falls themselves, and a mere 15 minutes’ drive. The nearest airport is Victoria Falls (24km).

Accomodation at Lokuthula Lodge The Lokuthula Lodges consist of 2 and 3 bedroomed self-catering units. All the lodges have two storeys and are open-sided to allow for refreshing cool air and beautiful views. The 2 bedroomed lodges have 1 double and 1 twin room and 1 bathroom with a shower/bath combo. They have additional sofa beds and can sleep a maximum of 6 people. The 3 bedroomed lodge has 1 double and 2 twin rooms. The double room has an en-suite bathroom while the second bathroom is separate from the other rooms. These larger units also have additional sleeper couches and can sleep a maximum of eight people. Both types have fully equipped kitchens, lounges, terraces and barbeque areas. The kitchens are exceptionally well fitted out and have just about anything you could need during your stay. The rooms are large and airy and decorated in bright vibrant colours. They are open-ended with canvass ‘blinds’ that can be rolled down in the evening or during rainy episodes. When open, they afford beautiful views over the lush bush outside. The lodges are serviced by housekeeping staff on a daily basis, which includes the provision of fresh linen. Dining While the lodgers are wonderfully set up for self-catering, the available produce and meat are somewhat difficult to come by. The nearby SPAR convenience store (in Victoria Falls Town) will have some provisions, but their supplies are unfortunately not too reliable. If you are lucky you shouldn’t encounter any problems, but if you’re in doubt – we recommend the various alternative dining options available on the property. The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge offers its guests a couple of restaurants and a bar. The main restaurant is called Makuwa-Kuwa and overlooks the nearby waterhole. Apart from its great views of elephant and buffalo, it also offers an a la carte menu of local, regional and international cuisine. The restaurant is large and seats between 90 and 110 guests at a time. Breakfast is in the form of a buffet and includes cereals and home made muesli, health bread, oven-fresh pastries, jams, cold meats, a selection of Zimbabwean cheeses, fruit and fruit juices. Lunch consists of light pub meals such as sandwiches, health drinks, speciality coffees, pastries and homemade ice creams. A selection of speciality coffees and teas are also available, including Zimbabwe’s own Nyanga Estate tea. Their interesting dinner menu includes appetisers such as Seared Ostrich Fillets (flash fried strips of ostrich tenderloin with herbed corn bread, drizzled with a sun dried tomato and balsamic vinaigrette), their own unique Mosi Oa Tunya Salad, Zimbabwean 'Vumba' Cheese (deep fried soft cheese wedges rolled with sesame seeds, and served with a red onion marmalade) with mains ranging from Wok-fried Crocodile and Vegetable Strips to Grilled Marinated Warthog Fillet. Less adventurous, but equally satisfying meals are also available, as well as vegetarian dishes. They also have an extensive dessert menu that caters for all tastes – from the health conscious (Fruit Kebab - skewered seasonal fruit pieces drizzled with cinnamon honey sauce with toasted pecan nuts) to the decidedly decadent (Falls Brandy Tart - a hot pudding filled with dates and honey and served with vanilla ice cream). The restaurant is ideal for themed dinners and the different themes on offer include Colonial, Into Africa, Nandi (home of the beautiful African queen). It also caters for business lunches and cocktail parties. Their Buffalo Bar overlooks the nearby waterhole and has its own game viewing platform. There’s nothing better than having a refreshing drink while watching a herd of antelope graze and take to the water. Guests can also dine at the nearby The Boma – Place of Eating for a dining experience with a difference. They offer a wonderful variety of dishes from the buffet table, including fish, game, beef, pork, vegetable dishes, traditional maize porridge and all kinds of other delicacies. For the adventurous – they even have Mopani worms, and if you’re brave enough to eat one – they give you a certificate to take home! The meals are accompanied by a live and vibrant show of traditional singing and dancing as well as storytelling, future-gazing and other local traditions. You can even have your face painted in a traditional pattern! Please ensure you make reservations though, as it is quite a popular place. The Boma also has a poolside pub and snack bar for light lunches and refreshing drinks.
