Set on on gentle slope nestled between two rolling hills, Madikwe Safari Lodge overlooks game-filled plains with the Dwarsberg Hills in the distance and the Marico River. Guest areas of all camps feature a series of intimate sitting areas and shaded outdoor seating on the expansive covered decks. Madikwe Game Reserve, in the North West province, is one of South Africa's largest Big Five game reserves. Set in a malaria-free area near the border with Botswana, the 76 000 hectare reserve supports a diverse combination of bushveld and the semi-arid Kalahari. Madikwe Safari Lodge offers guests a choice of three exclusive camps: Lelapa, Dithaba and Kopano are each uniquely different and give guests a choice to stay together as a group of family and friends, or to have a more private bush experience as a couple. Lelapa which means family in the local dialect is exactly that. It has the spirit and comfort of being at a home and is the Lodge where we allow guests of all ages to stay. Kopano which means “small gathering” comprises only four suites with a beautiful common area offering an intimate and private experience. Dithaba, meaning mountain in the local dialect, is located slightly higher up on the mountain and has incredible views over the open plains. This Lodge has only 4 suites and is well suited to a group of friends or family members taking this over exclusively to make it their home whilst on safari.

Area Attractions

Madikwe’s game viewing is of a very high standard, aided by the fact that all guides are in radio contact with one another, and provides regular sightings of zebra, Impala, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, white rhino, lion, wild dog, elephant, white rhino, brown hyena, and spotted hyena. Leopard sightings in Madikwe have always been a topic of discussion but the sightings are becoming a lot more frequent as individuals are becoming more relaxed with the presence of vehicles in the area. Along with Buffalo and Black Rhino, Leopard are now seen fairly regularly in the reserve. Sightings in both areas are generally limited to a maximum of 3 vehicles in order to maintain the feeling of exclusivity and to ensure the animals’ well-being. Overall, and this is a personal opinion, I would say that Madikwe offers far better general game viewing (and is probably one of the best reserves to view white rhino); with differences in sighting frequency for elephants, and lions being negligible; whilst the Kruger definitely dominates in the frequency and quality of Leopard and Buffalo sightings. Children of all ages are welcome at Madikwe Safari Lodge's Lelapa Lodge. There are many activities available for children including: Family safari drives, bush orientation, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with plaster of Paris, baking in the kitchen, making pizzas in the boma, star gazing, games night and much more. Unfortunately no game drives are allowed for children under the age of two years and children between the ages of two and five are only allowed on the late morning family safari drive. The family safari drive for children aged two to five departs at 11:00 in winter and 10:00 in summer and lasts approximately two hours. (Kids don't bake in the kitchen, and we can't determine how long bumbles are, they're usually about an hour depending on the age of the kids and how well they behave on the vehicle. We generally tell parents it's an hour bumble so that there aren't any problems if we can't keep them entertained for longer than an hour, if they are happy and behave well we keep them out a bit longer). Follow your heart to the bush. Whether it’s your first breakaway as a couple or your second honeymoon, you want it to be an unforgettable experience. Romantic, idyllic, private and secluded – Madikwe Safari Lodge is the ideal setting to celebrate the start of a new life together or to fall in love all over again. The suites are private and spacious equipped with their own private swimming pools with great views over the surrounding landscape. In Winter, May through to August, the wood burning fireplace in each suite makes for once of the most romantic turndowns, falling asleep as the soft light flickers throughout the room. Surrender to the beauty and serenity of the bushveld and enjoy being pampered and looked after by our staff, while you get to relax and truly enjoy each other’s company. Surrounded by nature and all its charms, a honeymoon at Madikwe Safari Lodge is without a doubt one of the most romantic getaways you’ll ever experience.
