Songwe Point

DestinationVictoria Falls
Songwe Point Village is a unique, purpose-built Zambian village situated on the edge of the Zambezi gorge, just 5 km downstream from Victoria Falls. The village is reached by road and is a mere 11km from the Victoria Falls. Visitors to Songwe Point stay in 8 thatched huts built in an oval formation. They are fitted with traditional furnishings – but you don’t have to worry about sleeping on a reed mat on the floor - they have modern beds with comfortable modern mattresses. The village only sleeps 16 people, so the service is focussed and personal. Taking a bath at Songwe Point is an experience in itself - one we wanted to savour for as long as possible. The baths and showers overlook the beautiful Zambezi gorge and the river below and you’ll have to go far to find better bathroom views than these! A great treasure of stone-age artifacts have been found on the site – some even dating back 700 000 years. It’s therefore no surprise that Songwe Point is a very attractive place for anyone interested in paleontology, geology or Africa’s origins. The village is built on 300 acres of private property surrounded by large areas of World Heritage land. It was developed with the support of Senior Chief Mukuni of the nearby Mukuni village and constructed to closely resemble a traditional tribal village. The thatched huts have been named after past chiefs of the tribe.

Dining at Songwe Point All meals and alcoholic drinks are included in the fare. We simply loved the dinner experience. African drums summoned us to the central ntantaala (Boma) where we were treated to celebratory songs and dancing, followed by a traditional Zambian meal. The food was a bit unusual, but not bad at all.
