Sussi Lodge and Chuma House

DestinationVictoria Falls
Sussi and Chuma Lodge is a safari lodge set on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia, within the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park - close to the Victoria Falls and easily reached by road. The lodge was named after Sussi and Chuma, Dr Livingstone’s two loyal porters who accompanied him on his many travels and who returned his body to England after his death. Set on the lush river banks, it is easy to see why the original inhabitant named the place ‘Fairyland’ – it is simply gorgeous. At night they even light up the opposite island – making for a spectacular view. The property houses two distinct accommodation options, Sussi Lodge and Chuma House. Sussi Lodge is a collection of 10 luxury thatched tree houses built into the canopy of ebony trees overlooking the mighty Zambezi. Canopy-level walkways connect the houses to the elevated lounge and main bar with its shady palms and comfy armchairs. This decked platform offers beautiful views of the popular elephant ‘swimming hole’ and the lodge’s own ‘mini Victoria Falls’ (a little waterfall next to one of the tree houses). Chuma House is an exclusive self-contained villa with two large bedrooms, accommodating up to four people. This luxury house comes with its own private chef, butler, guide, vehicle and boat. You won’t easily find a great deal like this. One of the bedrooms can even convert into an office! (Not that we’d want you to work in this beautiful place – we prefer the option of complete relaxation!).

Area Attractions

Accomodation at Sussi Lodge and Chuma House Guests have two accommodation options to choose from. The first, Sussi Lodge, consists of ten large tree houses built high up in the branches of ebony trees on the lush riverside property. These tree houses have beautiful thatched roofs and lovely deck walkways. Their doors open up completely onto private viewing decks, to fully expose the beautiful river and surrounds below. The emphasis is on nature with natural muslin and linen fabrics complementing the cane, thatch and teak furnishings. The bathrooms are en-suite with beautiful large baths, separate showers and scented candles to add that special touch. They also have laundry baskets, built-in cupboards and lovely leather headboards over the beds. As the property falls within a national park, you may be privileged enough to see elephants, hippo, game and all sorts of animals ‘visit’ the property. This is truly amazing, and if you were wondering – still very safe. As the chalets are raised you will have a great view without having to encounter any ‘visitors’ face to face. But for your convenience, the rooms are equipped with whistles – in case you need to alert a member of staff. Ceiling fans keep the rooms cool while a discreet bar fridge offers welcome sundowner provisions and snacks. All the beds have mozzie nets to protect you at night and there are tea and coffee stations for your convenience. They informed us that all the rooms will soon be fitted with air-conditioning – to make your stay even more enjoyable. We loved the little details in the room, such as the emblem of Sussi and Chuma in the wash basins, as well as the fresh flowers on the bed and towels, and the beautiful lamps that adorn the room. The second option is Chuma House. This exclusive riverbank villa is situated 9km upstream for the Victoria Falls and is completely self-contained with 2 ensuite bedrooms. Of these one is a double room with a bath and outdoor shower and one a twin room with a bath and indoor shower. It also has a large lounge and dining area, a kitchenette, a veranda, a barbeque area and a private swimming pool. The second bedroom has telephone and modem links and can be converted into an office. The villa also has satellite television, hairdryers, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and a fully-stocked bar. And to top it all off – you have your own private chef to cook all your meals. Dining at Sussi and Chuma Lodge Dining at Sussi and Chuma Lodge is on a full board basis which includes all meals, teas and coffees, soft drinks, local beers and house wines. All the meals are served in a table d’hote fashion and whenever possible, outdoors. In the evenings the scene is set with a log fire and the rush of the river in the background. A wide selection of dishes is served, blending local ingredients with international flavours. They currently have an upstairs bar in the main building, next to the dining area, but both of these are planned to be moved downstairs in the near future – with a beautiful lounge to replace them. The bar is really well stocked – and we were quite impressed with its offerings. There is also another bar set on the deck overlooking the water. At night guests can enjoy sundowners while taking in the magnificent view. We were informed that a herd of elephant had just crossed the river prior to our arrival and that they could be clearly seen from the lodge. Guests with children will be glad to know that they offer special kids’ menus and early dinners. Guests staying at Chuma House will have their own private chef who will meet with them on a daily basis to discuss their requirements for the day. You will be served either in the privacy or the house or outdoors in the surrounding area.
