SPIOENKOP GAME RESERVE Home to White Rhino, Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Kudu and numerous other antelope species. The reserve which is 4500 ha is managed by Ezimvelo (KZN) Wildlife. 1500 ha of the reserve is under water. The gate entrance is a 45 minute drive from the lodge and entrance is R15 per person. BIRDING There are 275 bird species in the area. Please ask reception for a list if you are interested. BRITISH PLUGS There is a British three-pronged square plug in each room located to the left of the dressing table behind the waste paper basket. There is also a two-pronged plug next to the bed. CELL PHONES The cell phone reception varies but is best near the car park. Please respect the other guests’ peace and quiet and refrain from using cell phones in the lodge. COLD There are down duvets in the cupboard on the top shelf, heaters in the corner of the room and hot water bottles in your hanging spacer to keep you snug in the winter months. FOOD Our food is prepared with farm fresh local ingredients. Please let us know if you have any food allergies or preferences so we can cater accordingly. GRATUITIES Should you like to leave a gratuity for staff there is a communal tip box in the office. Guides are usually tipped separately. HORSE RIDING Spectacular horse rides through the hills on uneven terrain offers the experienced rider an unforgettable time. R per person for 1,5 hours HAIRDRYER There is a hairdryer hanging in your cupboard, with plug point beside the dressing table. LAUNDRY A basic service is available, weather permitting. Please leave your laundry under the basin in the bathroom. Hand-washing powder is situated next to your hand basin. LIBRARY We have an extensive variety of informative books in our library which we love to share but please do not take them home with you. MOSQUITOES We are not in a malarial area but there are a few pesky mosquitoes around in the summer. The roof fan is great at confusing them and there is insect repellent next to your bed. SWIMMING POOL There are pool towels in the basket in your cupboard. Follow the first path that runs down the hill to the left of room 1. SMOKING There is an ashtray on your dressing table should you wish to smoke but please refrain from doing so inside the room. WALKS There are numerous walks on our property varying in length and difficulty. See the map enclosed in your folder for directions. It is highly recommendable to take a guide with you, as it brings to life so much of the bird, plant and animal life. There are walking sticks on the veranda and binoculars available from the reception. The dogs love to explore and are excellent guardians when out in the bush. South: 28° 39’41.6” East: 29° 29’ 13.6” Altitude amsl: 1207m FROM OR TAMBO (JOHANNESBURG) INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: 1. Driving out of the airport complex take the R24 (Witbank Highway) westwards TOWARDS Johannesburg. 2. After about 10km there is a large interchange and take the N3 south towards Durban – and then follow directions below….. FROM JOHANNESBURG (3 AND A HALF HOURS) 1. Take the N3 out of Johannesburg towards Durban. 2. Bypass Heidelberg, Villiers, Warden and Harrismith. 3. Take the R616 glide-off to Bergville/Ladysmith (Exit No. 230). 4. Turn right towards Bergville. Go for about 19km. 5. Approximately 1km after the Easby Guest House sign turn left onto the D564 (Hambrook Village and Rangeworthy Cemetery). 6. Follow this gravel road for about 8km. 7. The Lodge is at the end of this road – signpost left over the cattle grid. FROM DURBAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: 1. Driving out of the airport complex take the N2 highway south towards Durban (heading South the sea should be on your left hand side). 2. After a few km the N2 has signs the N3 North to Pietermaritzburg and N3 to Durban. 3. Take the N3 Pietermaritzburg highway. 4. and then follow directions below….. FROM DURBAN (2 AND A HALF HOURS) 1. Take the N3 out of Durban towards Johannesburg. 2. Bypass Pietermaritzburg, Mooi River and Estcourt. 3. Take the R616 glide-off to Bergville/Ladysmith (Exit No. 230). 4. Turn left towards Bergville. Go for about 19km. 5. Approximately 1km after the Easby Guest House sign, turn left onto the D564. Follow this gravel road to the lodge for 8km.Area Attractions
ACTIVITIES BATTLEFIELD TOURS The Flagship tour is the Battle of Spioenkop, which enthralls most people, whereas the Battle of Colenso together with Churchill’s Capture at Chieveley is for the more discerning historian. SPIOENKOP Breakfast around 07h45 after which the tour departs at 08h30 to this breathtaking hilltop battlefield where this most compelling story, in which Winston Churchill, Louis Botha and Mahatma Ghandi who all played a part, is told. The tour returns in time for lunch, approximately four hours later. COLENSO AND CHURCHIIL’S CAPTURE After lunch (at approx. 14h30), the tour departs for the site of Winston Churchill’s Capture, this incident and his subsequent escape propelled him onto the political stage in Britain. The tour then proceeds to the Battle of Colenso, where Gen. Sir Redvers Buller VC suffered his first defeat in his attempt to relieve Ladysmith. Seven Victoria Crosses were won in a courageous attempt to save the guns. NATURE WALKS AND HORSE RIDING Guests can take themselves off on walks on the farm(no dangerous game) or be accompanied by a staff member if they would like a Guided Nature Walk. Marked trails range between 2km & 6km. Guided horse rides to suit both novice and experienced riders are also available, the type and duration arranged on request. Both walks and rides offer breathtaking views of the Drakensberg Mountains and Spioenkop Game Reserve - with excellent rhino sightings and more than 270 bird species. SPIOENKOP GAME RESERVE Guests can visit and self-drive drive in the Spioenkop Game Reserve – about 50min from the lodge towards Winterton. Game Walks in the game reserve can only be arranged at short notice should Simon or Cheryl be available. They are more strenous than the Nature Walks, as there are no maintained trails in the park and the terrain is uneven. There is an extra charge for this activity. MOUNTAIN BIKING Three Trees offers a range of different mountain biking trails on the property, either with your own bikes or use of the bikes at the lodge. In close proximity are some more technical trails in the Drakensberg, which can be done with a guide on request. The famous 130km “Berg & Bush” mountain bike trail runs through the property in November each year. GOLF There are a number of golf courses in the Drakensberg, all within an hour’s drive. HIKING IN THE BERG & SAN ART The lodge offers great access to the Drakensberg for both guided and self drive trips. Royal Natal National Park, Cathedral Peak and the Champagne Valley providing well organised and exhilirating hikes and breathtaking views. Details available upon request. Trips to see original San Art paintings can also be arranged. LADYSMITH SEIGE MUSEUM The Siege Museum and old Anglican Church make a fascinating and worthwhile excursion.
