Situated on the banks of the Sand River, Umkumbe occupies a piece of pristine land in the celebrated Sabi Sand Wildtuin. One of the most affordable accommodations in the reserve, Umkumbe certainly does not lack in either comfort or game viewing excellence. Being a family owned and operated safari lodge, knowledge of the leopard-famed area is well established, while excellent safari guides are expert big-cat trackers, photographers, and lovers of African wildlife. During winter, the river thins out and dries up, opening up a private view of copious elephant herds, lion prides, and buffaloes that wander the riverbed in front of the lodge.
