Ponta do Ouro

Ponto do Ouro (Point of Gold), the first of seven points between Kosi Bay and Santa Maria was mostly abandoned during the recent civil war. This has now made a major come back in recent years with a number of buildings being renovated and many new buildings and developments. Diving and Fishing are major attractions. Dolphin encounters, a non profit organization that has researched Ponta's local 300 strong pod for the past 12 years offers "swimming with dolphins" and has it's head quarters in Ponto do Ouro. 7 km North is Ponta Malongane. Much quieter and less developed then Ponto do Ouro it is really just a resort - Parque de Malongane has chalets and camping sites and a well equiped dive centre. A further 4 km up the coast is Ponto Mamoli. Wakene Residential Estate is situated on a remote beach halfway between Malongane and Mamoli. Approximately 500 m North of Wakene is Fredrico which is a lesser known protected snorkeling area with a reef that extends to the shore line to form a large marine water world. Numerous marine and terrestrial creatures frequent the Wakene beach and coastal forest including Leatherback and Logger head turtles and elephant occasionally pass through. Directions To Wakene Residential Estate Ponto do Ouro

Wakene Residential Estate is situated approximately 15 km North of Kosi Bay in Southern Mozambique. From Durban, take the N2 north. Turn onto the R22 at Hluhluwe and follow signs to Sodwana Bay and then Kosi Bay. From Joburg, take the N17 to Ermelo, the N2 to Jozini, and then follow signs to Kosi Bay. The sandy tracks on the Mozambican side of the border appear confusing at first, but they're mostly just deviations from two main roads: the one that goes straight (north) to Maputo 0 take this one to get to the Maputo Elephant Reserve and the Santa Maria Peninsula - and the one that goes right (east) to Ponta do Ouro, Ponta Malongane and Ponta Mamoli.
